How to apply make-up for a photoshoot

A Personal Brand photoshoot can be a little scary, especially if you are not sure how to apply make-up for a photoshoot. If you need help with makeup on the day, this is something we go into detail about in your pre photoshoot consultation meeting. More information on how to prepare for a photoshoot can be found here. You can either book a makeup artist for the personal brand photoshoot or do it yourself. If it is the latter then you are going to love this read. I have worked with Bryony Dalton on many shoots before and she is amazing.

Bryony has extensive experience and has won many awards for her work. She has very kindly shared her 5 top tips on how to apply make-up for a photoshoot. Enjoy!

1. Less isn’t always more!

Don’t be afraid to apply more make up than you usually would. Whether natural light or studio light, the camera will soften and lighten colours on the skin meaning that the bronzer you were afraid to apply for fear of looking too much will actually be your best friend.

2. All about the eyes!

There are certain areas of the face that the camera is especially drawn to, the eyes being key and so we want to make sure these areas are enhanced and defined to come across best in a photo. Eyeliner is amazing to define the lash line, it’ll make lashes look fuller and in making the whites of your eyes look brighter, the eyes suddenly appear bigger. If liner is something you struggle to apply, ditch your usual liquid or pencil liner and instead use a dark eyeshadow gently buffed along your lash line applied with a small brush or even a cotton tip for a super easy yet effective finish.

3. Confidence is key!

Being behind the lens can be really daunting and so you’ll want to be feeling as comfortable as can be. Think back to when you did your make up and felt really great- perhaps it was a pretty champagne eyeshadow and fluttery lashes on your wedding day or a bold red lip you wore when you nailed a presentation at work. With the right make up we all feel pretty powerful so channel that and watch the confidence ooze out!

4. You Glow Girl!

Radiance and Glow is something we all crave- it makes us look healthier, youthful and even happier! However, the photographers flash will pick up on shine on all areas of the face and so it’s really important to only apply highlighters to areas of the face we wish to enhance or that we don’t usually shine. Applying a highlighter on the forehead, chin or lower cheek area may look less glow and more hot flush. Instead stick to the highs of the cheekbone to cheat a lifted bone structure and radiant glow.

5. Easy on the shine!

Following on from above, a decent powder is a must have to set when make up is first applied but also to keep to hand during the shoot to blot down any shinier areas. Ask Lisa to check how your skin is looking on camera with a test shot before beginning the shoot, that way you can quickly take down unwanted shine before you begin. Apply using a small brush so you can access all those oilier, harder to reach areas while never overloading the skin. My favourite powder is the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Powder- it’s flattering on all skin types and ages, offering a velvety airbrushed finish.
